The Race Flags and
What They Mean.
GREEN FLAG = GO The Green Flag signals the start of the race, and indicates the
track is clear when racing. The flagman will turn off the track signal lights on the pace
lap prior to the display of the green flag. All cars must close up nose to tail and hold a position at the
speed set by the lead car on the pole position until the green flag is
displayed. On ALL starts it is the leaders responsibility to set a reasonable
pace prior to the display of the green flag. Lead cars that fail to set a
reasonable pace may, at the discretion of the flagman, be sent to the back of
the field. Drivers observed disrupting a start by making sudden changes in
speed ("brake checking") or driving erratically may also be sent to
the back of the field.
YELLOW FLAG = CAUTION The Yellow Flag signals a potentially dangerous condition on the
race track. All cars MUST slow down immediately, and maintain their position
and continue at a safe speed around the track. DO NOT race to the flag stand when the caution flag is
displayed.
RED FLAG = DANGER The Red Flag signals that the race has been stopped. Due to a
critical condition on the track which requires emergency attention by the
safety crews. All cars shall stop right where they are at immediately!!
Officials will direct you to a specified area of the track. NO CREW MEMBERS OR SPECTATORS ARE ALLOWED ON THE RACE TRACK DURING
RED FLAG CONDITIONS! Cars leaving the track under a red flag CANNOT return to
the track until the red light goes out and are subject to Restart rules.
BLACK FLAG = DISQUALIFICATION The Black Flag signals that your car MUST leave the race. The
car MUST go immediately to the pit area. Information may be obtained at the
pit area regarding the reason of the black flag. Cars that are given the
black flag for safety reasons (flat tire, loose sheet metal, bumpers, etc.)
may return to the track when the problem has been repaired. Once the black
flag is displayed, the car is no longer scored. Failure to obey a black flag
or stopping to argue with the flagman is not allowed.
WHITE FLAG = LAST LAP The White Flag signals that the leader has started the last lap
of the race. Once the white flag has been displayed the checkered flag will
follow unless an emergency condition occurs which requires the yellow or red
flag to be displayed. In the event of a caution flag (Yellow or Red)
displayed during the White flag lap, all racing ceases. The official order of
finish will be determined by the position of each car at the last completed
lap under the Green. EXCEPTION: If the yellow is displayed on the last lap
which involves the leaders of the race, officials will determine if there is
a need to go back and do a Green, White, Checkers Restart.
CHECKERED FLAG = RACE IS OVER The Checkered Flag signals the end of the race as the leader
crosses the start-finish line. The balance of the field receives the flag on
the same lap. Take a cool-down lap and exit to the pits. The checkered flag
means ONLY that the race is over. The official order of finish will be
determined after technical inspections have been made and a review of the
scoring has been completed.
BLUE with GOLD STRIP = MOVE OVER The Blue with Gold Strip Flag signals a lapped driver or slow
moving car to allow a faster car to pass. The driver being passed should move
to the outside lane or hold their line on the track. |
